A New Take on “Defensive Routines”

Defensive Routines may consist of a combination of behaviors and attitudes, including: deflecting criticism, scapegoating, blaming other people or events, avoiding tasks, or behaving in ways that shift responsibility to others to prevent uncomfortable or embarrassing consequences. These are obviously undermining during a period of change because they can erode our capacity to accept ownership and responsibility for influencing the outcomes of change. The "victim-mindset" instead decreases resiliency and shifts focus away from productive responses to change.
